the 1958 and Baltimore Colts The Colts not only won National Football League championships both years the memorable 1958 outfit beat the New York Giants 23-17 in the sudden death overtime thriller Yankee Stadium witnesses term "the greatest game ever Sample himself ruined the Giants the following year with an interception and 42-yard touchdown return off Charlie Conerly in a 3 1 -1 6 victory But that was long ago as professional football has developed and Sample can be forgiven for dismissing such memories even as the Colts dismissed Sample after three seasons John had been (running with great men like Big Daddy Lipscomb and Lenny Moore on and off the field He had been running hard too for a cat barely old enough to vote and he acquired a reputation as bad news Furthermore he spoke his mind a trait largely unappreciated by owners and coaches who prefer their chattel to be seen but not heard So reputation followed him to the Pittsburgh Steelers Washington Redskins and finally out of the NFL So did his tongue During 1966 contract negotiations Coach Otto Graham of the Redskins allowed that Sample was already being paid beyond his talents Honest John replied that in his opinion so was the coach The next day Sample made the waiver list and was eventually reclaimed for the Jets by Weeb Ewbank the little fox who masterminded Baltimore to its titles when Sample first made the
